In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), like worldwide, women's rights are supported by social action and legal instruments. Strong evidence of women's empowerment and gender equality are the results of these efforts. Thus, it is crucial to analyse people's perceptions and daily experiences beyond official addresses and annual nationwide and worldwide celebrations.
Target Sarl surveyed on women's rights in the DRC from 15 to 22 February 2024. The survey was conducted by telephone and included 1540 participants from 8 main regions, including Kinshasa, Kongo Central, Equateur, Katanga, Province Orientale, North and South Kivu. The sample was representative, with quotas applied to ensure representation by gender, age, and city of residence. The survey aimed to assess public opinion on the progress of women's legal and social rights in DR Congo, and their current status in key areas including socio-cultural, economic, empowerment, health and security.
The results show that 50% of respondents believe that there has been a significant improvement in women's rights in the DRC. However, 19% of respondents disagreed. 23% had a qualified opinion and 8% were unsure. Perceptions are more positive among young people, with 58% expressing a positive opinion, closely followed by those aged 45-64. Gender wise, women are slightly more optimistic (51%) than men (49%).
