Women and Digital in DRC

March, dedicated to celebrating women, is always accompanied by a theme to identify a clear and prominent issue for the world communities.

For 2023, digital is highlighted as an unavoidable development driver. Nationally, this day was celebrated under the following theme: " Digital gender equality education for peace and women's and girls' empowerment in the DRC ".

Alongside this theme, Target Sarl reveals the results of the 2022 media survey to shed light on the use of the Internet by women in the DRC.

Results show that the Internet comes in 3rd place with a broad audience of 37% after radio (54%) and television (47%). Almost all women (99%) connect using their smartphones.

Regarding the women Internet users’ profile, the youngest, whose age ranges between 18 and 34 years, are mainly in the majority, with 72% against 21% for the 35 to 49 years (21%). Women aged 50 are in the minority with a low score of 8%.

These women's main activities are : They use social media, including Facebook and Twitter (79%), instant messaging (WhatsApp 78%), download videos (51%), audio files (43%), photos (41%), and applications on smartphones and tablets (25%). Some visit news sites (19%) and watch videos online (19%).

As for news sites, 65% of women use the Radio Okapi site for information, Actualite.cd 62%, Media Congo 54%, Jeune Afrique 45%, and Politico 32%.

Working women, i.e., those busy daily, sometimes combine their businesses with the Internet to achieve their goals. They represent 35% of Internet users. In contrast, non-working women are at 33% and students at 32%.

In terms of provinces, North Kivu is at the top of the scale with 16% of Internet users, followed by Kinshasa with 15%. South Kivu and Kongo Central and Katanga provinces are found with 8 and 7% respectively. The infographic details on the link below : Here
