DRC Mining Week: Serge Mumbu discusses how the DRC stands to benefit from global mining trends

A panel discussion at DRC Mining Week on Thursday, June 13, showcased mining trends and priorities. The panel featured Serge Mumbu, General Manager; Popol Mabolia, Director General of the Mining Registry; Bertrand Montembault, Partner at Herbert Smith Freehills; and John Dunlop, USAID Mission Director.

The panel discussed key issues related to the mining sector in the DRC. These included geopolitical trends, strategic priorities for mining, opportunities stemming from global trends, the need to balance economic development with environmental protection and social responsibility, and the recovery of Congolese identity within the mining sector.

In his speech, Target's CEO emphasized the importance of implementing policies and measures to encourage the DRC to take advantage of global trends and attract investors. He highlighted the significance of fostering leaders in each mining sector and encouraging them further.

Serge Mumbu also suggested that the Congolese government should promote the country to showcase its geological and mining potential and maximize its position on the world stage. "To accomplish this, we should not start from scratch, but rather examine countries that have successfully implemented good policies and draw inspiration from their experiences," he remarked.

When it comes to mining, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) needs to pragmatically implement its agenda, considering its population's specific concerns. The CEO of Target emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between the DRC as a country rich in geological resources and a population facing numerous challenges. This means developing policies that focus not only on the exploitation of mineral wealth but also on the benefits to the people.

Serge Mumbu points out that local communities often have specific expectations of mining companies, which can lead to misunderstandings. He notes that the increased mining production figures don't always align with local communities' daily lives.

Regarding corporate social responsibility (CSR), actions taken must consider the realities of the local population. This highlights the need for consultation between the Congolese government, the private sector, and local communities to reevaluate policies for the country's mining future in a way that benefits everyone.

The goal is to create strategies that support economic development and social and environmental well-being.

Serge Mumbu also emphasized the importance of collaboration between related sectors to further enhance the mining sector for the local economy. He cited examples such as infrastructure, energy, local industry, and human capital.

According to the General Manager of Target Sarl's firm, this collaboration will enable citizens to fully benefit from the mining industry's positive impact in a way that promotes inclusive development for the country. Additionally, it will enhance the public perception of the mining sector, making it more appealing, particularly to the younger generation.
