At Target, a day with Benjamin Mukini
Benjamin Mukini Lamoury has a degree in statistics. v. This Friday, we spent time with him to inform you about his work day.
Benjamin assists the Data Manager (head of the IT department at Target) with various tasks, including statistical data analysis, supervision, and follow-up in script design.
His day starts at 8 a.m. Once he arrives at work, Benjamin knows what he needs to do and finish before he goes home at night.
"I have a list of tasks that need to be done right. I start with the materials inventory for today, Friday, and I have to make some purchases. On top of that, I still have to check the NPS (Net Promoter Score) project reporting and supervise the production of the media study," he explains.
As for the inventory of all the computer equipment, Benjamin's job is to "check the current state of the stock and make sure that any projects will be supplied at the right time." Target has smartphones for field surveys, geolocation equipment including GARMIN GPRS, laptops, and desktop computers...
After the equipment inventory, Benjamin does an errand to buy computer consumables for the Project department.
The company's purchasing policy stipulates that computer needs are expressed and addressed to the IT department. The latter is the only one authorized to make purchases for the entire company. This task falls to Ben, as his supervisor likes to call him.
"If a department needs computer consumables, it writes to us, and I write a voucher and give it to the data manager. In his opinion, the voucher is sent to the management committee, which, after examination, gives the green light. Purchases are only made on Fridays," he says.
Ben will bring back printer cartridges and other computer accessories from his shopping trip.
When he returns from shopping, Benjamin has a double task: checking the NPS (Net Promoter Score) project reporting. "It's the evaluation of the quality of the services provided by the telecom operators" and the control of the figures sent by the field team (Quotas to be achieved, criteria to be respected).
"After checking the reporting, I will send it to the data manager, who will check to ensure everything is ok. Then, the report will be sent to the project department. The head of this department transmits the result of this work to the client," explains Ben.
The verification of the reporting is carried out in conjunction with the supervision of the production of the media study. A team of about four interns is working on this task under the watchful eye of the Data Analyst. With this job, "it's about ensuring everyone understands their task. I also assist anyone who may have problems in completing their work.
A few minutes before the break, Benjamin calls on the Data Manager, Blaise Pezo, his supervisor, for a planned exchange with the trainees regarding the execution of the job.
The exchange will focus on the work's evaluation and Target's new perspectives. The trainees are called to identify the possible weaknesses observed and make suggestions to improve the work.
While each trainee gives his point of view, faithful to his notepad, Benjamin notes some "important elements."
"Usually, we organize exchanges with consultants to improve our work. First for Target and then for our department. Here I have written down everything; I will write down important points and pass them on to the data manager, who will send them to the management committee", says Benjamin before summarizing the trainees' proposals:
"There were several interventions, among others, to integrate GPS coordinates in all studies to map the surveys (we use ODK Collect or CS Pro software) and for the studies that are done in the deep Congo where it is sometimes not possible to use smartphones, we could use GPRS capture devices like GARMIN.
Another proposal is to add audio files or use software that records audio and text.
The trainees were also asked to participate in more pieces of training to understand better the functioning of the software used by Target.
Internally, there was talk of training on other software to be used soon for rapid data processing, including Power Business Intelligence.
Finally, the last intervention will be to find tricks to track stolen data collection equipment or block it remotely.
Back from his break, Ben will continue overseeing the media study.
First, a quick table tour with the notebook in hand to ensure everything is going according to plan, then a few orientations to be taken with Blaise Pezo, his supervisor, and a phone call to the firm's equipment repairer to get the delivery date.
From time to time, Benjamin lends a hand to his colleagues with minor computer difficulties.
With thirty minutes to go before the end of the workday, he goes around the table once again to check on the progress of the trainees' work.
"As soon as each trainee has finished his or her part of the work, the consolidation of the media study databases, the verification, i.e., the quality control and the transmission of the file to the data manager for verification, will occur.
For this Friday, the day closes with a debriefing with the trainees on the volume of work done on the one hand and, on the other hand, the evaluation with the Data manager, the level achieved of the objectives that the department had assigned for the week and the planning of what to do during the following week.
